    IN THE SELF-STYLED REPUBLIC OF BIAFRA, THE BREAK-AWAY EASTERN REGION OF NIGERIA, CIVILIAN IN LOCAL CIVIL DEFENCE FORCES HAVE BEEN UNDERGOING INTENSIVE TRAINING RECENTLY. SEVERAL THOUSANDS OF THEM HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED TRAINING SESSIONS IN ENUGU AND PORT HARCOURT.

    WITH THE BREAK-AWAY REPUBLIC'S ARMY ESTIMATED AT ABOUT 7,000 MEN -- AGAINST THE FEDERAL ARMY ESTIMATED 10,500 -- THE SECESSIONIST EASTERN REGION CAN ALSO CALL ON THE SUPPORT OF THE SEVERAL THOUSANDS CIVILIANS NOW TAKING PART IN INTENSIVE TRAINING.

    THE CIVILIANS -- ALL VOLUNTEERS -- HAVE BEEN EXHORTED IN RADIO BROADCASTS TO CONSIDER THEMSELVES 'VITAL LINKS IN THE NATIONAL CHAIN OF RESISTANCE'. THEY ARE UNPAID AND GENERALLY SUPPLY THEIR OWN WEAPONS.

    IN THE RECENT TRAINING, A SMALL NUMBER OF THE VOLUNTEERS WERE GIVEN RIFLES, BUT THE REST TRAINED WITH AN ASSORTMENT OF PERSONAL GUNS AND SHOT-GUNS - AND EVEN WOODEN REPLICAS OF RIFLES.

    EARLIER THIS MONTH, THE BREAKAWAY RELIGIONS LONE BOMBER, A B-26, STRAFED FEDERAL ARMY POSITIONS IN THE FIRST REPORTED AIR ACTION OF THE CONFLICT.

    THE BOMBER, WHICH ARRIVED IN THE REGION LAST MONTH, IS SAID BY THE UNITED STATES TO HAVE BEEN FLOWN TO ENUGU WITH AN ILLEGAL U.S REGISTRATION NUMBER AND NO CERTIFICATES OF AIRWORTHINESS. THE AMERICAN EMBASSY IN LAGOS CLAIMED THAT THE BOMBER HAD FORMERLY BELONGED TO THE FRENCH AIR FORCE AND HAD BEEN SOLD AS SURPLUS. LATER IT WAS SOLD TO A FRENCH CITIZEN, AND, CLAIMED THE EMBASSY, WAS FLOWN TO ENUGU BY A FRENCH CREW.
