Background: INTRODUCTION: Dick Stockton beat world no 1 Jimmy Connors 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the all-American final of the U.S. Professional Indoor Tennis Championships in Philadelphia on Sunday (30 January).

SYNOPSIS: In the opening minutes of the three hour match, the crowd were all behind the 25-year-old Stockton, who was regarded as the real underdog.

However, it didn't take long for people to realise that Stockton was right in form, and that the number one rated player in the world -- Connors -- was in real trouble. Stockton lost the first set easily 3-6. He won the second 6-4, lost the third 3-6, then took complete command in the fourth winning it 6-1.

Stockton's service kept Connors pinned to the baseline and he quickly raced to winning position in the final set.

Connors began one of his famous fightbacks when 2-5 down in the deciding set, but it wasn't to last.

Stockton regained his concentration and eventually he forced his opponent into a fatal error.

Stockton's victory was his first over Connors since both players were teenagers in 1969. It netted him almost 40,000 dollars U.S. (about 20,000 sterling in prizemoney.
