  • Description

Roars of encouragement for their champions came from traditionally dressed Bavarians as they watched strong men straining across a small table during the 'Finger-wrestling' championships at Garmisch recently.

Sitting at tables laden with bottles and beer mugs, enthusiastic supporters of this century old sport shouted with joy as their man succeeded in pulling his opponent across a table-top dividing line.

Caspar Brandhofer, a giant of a man, was chaired and cheered after he emerged victorious from the final 'pull'.

Competitors sit facing each other across a small table marked down the centre with a white line. Strong right - or left - arms are stretched out to grasp a metal ring with centre fingers only. At a given signal, the two antagonists strain with all their might. Sometimes the result of this contest of brute strength is decided when one competitor wrenches the ring from another grasp.
