THE MAIN OBJECT OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE WAS THE PORTUGUESE PRESENCE IN AFRICA. FOR THE FIVE-DAY CONGRESS, SPEAKERS CAME FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, INCLUDING CHINA, CUBA, EUROPE AND RUSSIA...AMONG THEM WAS ELDRIDGE CLEAVER, THE AMERICAN BLACK PANTHER LEADER, CURRENTLY LIVING IN EXILE IN ALGERIA. THEY ALL SPOKE AGAINST THE CONTINUING IMPERIALISM OF THE EUROPEAN POWERS, ESPECIALLY PORTUGAL.

A FINAL COMMUNIQUE PUBLISHED LAST MONDAY DENOUNCED PORTUGUESE "ACTS OF SABOTAGE" AGAINST TANZANIA, ZAMBIA, GUINEA AND CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE, AND CONDEMNED AFRICAN HEADS OF STATE WILLING TO ENTER POLITICAL DIALOGUE WITH SOUTH AFRICA.

THE CONFERENCE ALSO CALLED ON THE FEDERATION OF WORLD DEMOCRATIC YOUTH, TO SEND VOLUNTEERS TO PORTUGUESE COLONIAL TERRITORIES. ANOTHER DEMAND WAS THE WITHDRAWAL OF COUNTRIES FINANCING THE CABORRA BASSA DAM PROJECT IN MOZAMBIQUE. ALTOGETHER THIRTY YOUTH DELEGATIONS ATTENDED THE CONFERENCE. IN THE OPENING SPEECH, THE PRESIDENT OF THE CONGOLESE SOCIALIST YOUTH ATTACKED PORTUGAL FOR ITS "PLUNDERING MISSION" IN AFRICA...AND SAID THAT CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE WOULD ALWAYS SUPPORT ANGOLA IN ITS STRUGGLE AGAINST PORTUGUESE IMPERIALISM.
