Following their huge rally in Athens last week, at the start of their election campaign the Greek Communist Party have been taking their election message to the people outside the capital. On Sunday (13 November) the KKE attracted thousands to a rally in Larissa, in the centre of the country.
SYNOPSIS: The leader of the KKE, Harila???s Florakis, was to speak at the rally, and people came from all over the mainly agricultural Thessaly region to hear him. They flooded the main square in Larissa, carrying placards with messages condemning NATO, the United States, and the Greek Prime Minister, Mr. Karamanlis-who called elections a year early, hoping to get a fresh mandate from the people. Mr. Florakis accused Mr. Karamanlis of having created more national and social problems in Greece than he had solved in his three years in office. The Prime Minister, he said, had betrayed the farmers, promising them help with mechanisation and research, but in the end forcing them to accept low prices for their produce to provide big profits for the monopolies.
Mr. Florakis received an enthusiastic response from the crowd. He warned his listeners not to be misled by what he said were the lies being fed them by government circles in an effort to discredit the KKE. Polling in Greece takes place on the 20th November.
Karamanlis promised democracy, he said, while police and gendarmerie armoured cars crushed all farmers' and workers' demonstrations demanding their right. "What the farmers will have to gain from Greece's association with the EEC, while the EEC's farmers are being crushed by monopolies and the heavy prices of industrial products ?", Florakis continued. "That's why -- he said -- it is necessary that we build the anti-imperialistic and anti-monopoly democratic struggle of the farmers and the workers, with the help of the whole of the Greek people and particularly the Greek Youth, to face the gangster-like imperialistic organizations".
He further accused Karamanlis and his government to pressing for the return of Greece into the Military wing of NATO, her association with the EEC and the signing of the greco-american agreement on U.S. bases in Greece in an effort to help strengthening those organizations strategic and economic positions vis-a-vis the Eastern Med. an??? Socialist countries and the Arab World.
Finally, he said, the KKE is definitely against Greece's association with NATO and the EEC, without demanding any link of the country with neither Warsaw Pact nor Comecon. "This is a big lie, he said, for government circles have invented this in an effort to misled the farmers and workers. KKE wishes a free and independent national policy".
