Background: THE EAST GERMAN COMMUNIST LEADER, HERR WALTER ULBRICHT, WAS DUE TO LEAVE PORT SAID FOR HOME TODAY (TUESDAY) FOLLOWING AN EIGHT DAY VISIT TO EGYPT WHICH BROUGHT THE CRISIS BETWEEN CAIRO, BONN AND ISRAEL TO A CLIMAX. DURING THE VISIT AGREEMENTS ON A VARIETY OF FIELDS WERE SIGNED, INCLUDING ONE ON ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION, WHICH WAS FOLLOWED BY A BANQUET GIVEN BY HERR ULBRICHT IN HONOUR OF PRESIDENT NASSER.

SHAKING HANDS WITH PRESIDENT NASSER AFTER THE SIGNING, HERR ULBRICHT SAID THAT HE WISHED THE ARAB NATION SUCCESS IN ITS PROGRESSION "ON THE PATH OF SOCIALIST CONSTRUCTION."
A JOINT U.A.R. - EAST GERMAN COMMUNIQUE, ISSUED LAST NIGHT, SAID THAT PRESIDENT NASSER WOULD VISIT EAST GERMANY AT A DATE TO BE SET TO RETURN HERR ULBRICHT'S VISIT. THE TWO COUNTRIES SIGNED AGREEMENTS ON TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION, TECHNIC-SCIENTIFIC RELATIONS AND IN THE FIELDS OF CULTURE, SCIENCE AND HEALTH.

THE COMMUNIQUE SAID THAT EAST GERMANY "RECOGNISES ALL THE FIGHTS OF THE ARAB PEOPLE IN PALESTINE" AND "SUPPORTS THE ARAB POSITION RELATING TO THE JORDAN RIVER."
(MEANWHILE, THE WEST GERMAN GOVERNMENT HAS STRONGLY CRITICISED HERR ULBRICHT'S VISIT AND THREATENED TO CUT OFF ITS ECONOMIC AID TO CAIRO, ALTHOUGH NO INDICATION HAS BEEN GIVEN BY THE U.A.R. THAT IT WILL RECOGNISE THE EAST GERMAN GOVERNMENT.)
