  • Description

The promise of 1,000 Montgomery students was apparently forgotten today, as all but nine of them turned up for their final quarterly examinations in the Alabama State College.

School President H Councill Trenholm said that most had returned to the campus.

The issue at stake was the suspension of nine students who had been arrested for lunch counter disturbances, and suspended from high school after their immediate release. But the suspension will take effect tomorrow March 4th and the nine will be permitted to take their quarterly examinations along with the rest of the students.

Demonstrations to try to break down racial barriers in the south are spreading rapidly. Where the negroes have taken part in sit-down strikes at lunch counters in 'protest' against segregated luncheon service, law enforcement officers have declared such actions 'illegal and dangerous'
A 'habeus corpus' petition was denied in Nashville Tennessee to a woman student who chose a workhouse sentence rather than accept a fine for a sit-down demonstration. This was being regarded as a test case - for over 144 students so far have been arrested.
