Background: BRITAIN'S VIC ELFORD AND CO-DRIVER, DAVID STONE, WON THE 1968 MONTE CARLO RALLY TODAY (FRIDAY). SECOND WAS PAULI TOIVONEN OF FINLAND WITH FELLOW COUNTRYMAN, RAUNO AALTONEN, THIRD. THE FIRST TWO PLACE-GETTERS DROVE GERMAN PORCHES. BRITISH DRIVERS AND CARS TOOK FOURTH AND FIFTH POSITIONS WHILE THE WOMEN'S SECTION WAS WON FOR THE SIXTH TIME BY MRS. PAT MOSS-CARLSSON OF BRITAIN.

IT WAS THIRD TIME LUCKY FOR 32-YEAR-OLD ELFORD, REGARDED AS ONE OF THE RALLY'S TOP DRIVERS. HE WAS RARROWLY BEATEN INTO SECOND PLACE BY AALTONEN LAST YEAR AND WAS DISQUALIFIED IN 1966. THE UNLUCKIEST DRIVER IN THE RALLY WAS GERARD LARROUSSE OF FRANCE. HE WAS LEADING HALFWAY THROUGH MOUNTAIN PASSES ABOVE MONTE CARLO - WHEN HE RAN OFF THE ROAD BY STRIKING A PATCH OF SNOW SHOVELLED ON TO THE COURSE BY HOOLIGANS. POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR THE CULPRITS, WHO COULD HAVE CAUSED A FATAL ACCIDENT. FORTY-TWO OF THE 59 CARS, WHICH STARTED THE LAST LEG OF THE RALLY, COMPLETED THE COURSE.
