Background: Wednesday, 29 November, would have been the 76th birthday of the late President William Tubman of Liberia. The occasion was observed with a ceremony at which President William Tolbert led ministers and military leaders to his predecessor's tomb to lay a wreath.

SYNOPSIS: The tomb of the late President William Tubman of Liberia was the scene of a ceremony last week to observe what would have been his 76th birthday. President William Tolbert led the party of ministers and military leaders.

The Liberian National Guard played the national anthem, as well as the late leader's favourite tune, "Old Soldiers Never Die."
The widow and other members of the Tubman family were also at the ceremony, which included the laying of a wreath by President Tolbert.

President Tubman died in hospital in London in July last year. He had held office since 1943, and had ???aded in welding into one nation the many different racial groups in Liberia. Liberia was founded in ???822 for the re-settlement of former slates in the United States, and there were already twenty-eight different tribes in the country. President Tubman was himself descended from black settlers who left the United States in 1834. He was first a teacher, then a lawyer and a soldier before becoming a politician. On the night before his funeral fifty thousand Liberian people joined the family in all-night prayers.
