  • Description

More than ten thousand Spanish Carlists held a rally at Estelle on Sunday (3 May) -- with Government permission. The rally was allowed on condition that they did not criticise General Franco. The Carlists support 80-year-old pretender to the Spanish Throne Prince Xavier of Bourbon-Parma and his son Carlos Hugo.

Last year the Carlists delivered biting attacks against General Franco but at Sunday's rally posters criticising him were burned by organisers. Members of the crowd wept with emotion when Princess Cecilia, sister of "Crown Prince" Carlos Hugo, arrived. Many of the Carlists fought for Franco in the civil war only to have their hopes of a Carlist monarchy dashed. General Franco has designated Prince Juan Carlos of Bourbon as his successor.

The rally took place at the ancient Irache Monastry in the mountains near Estella. Last year's turbulent gathering came after Prince Xavier and Carlos Hugo were expelled from Spain in November 1968.
