    The eleventh anniversary of Upper Volta's independence has been marked by a Big parade through the capital, Ouagedaugou.

    Reviewing the parade on Saturday (11 Dec) was the President of Upper Volta, General Lamizana.

    Representatives of various youth, sports and civil bodies took port in the parade -- as well as units of the police.

    SYNOPSIS: The President of Upper Volta, General Lamizana arrives for the annual anniversary parade in the capital, Ouagadeugou. The parade this year marks the eleventh anniversary of Upper Volta's independence And bot??? the parade began, the President reviewed various military unite from an open jeep.

    Thousands of people turned out to watch the parade -- which has become a high spot on the calender for the people of Ouagadougou.

    Special guests waited on the data to greet President Lamizana, when he completed his review of the troops. The President was accompanied on the jeep by his Minister of the Army, and the chief of the Armed Forces.

    This year's parade takes place in a mood of optimism in Upper volts. The military government has devoted attention to encouraging these activities which lead to increased production. In this way, Upper Volta hopes to become still less dependant on French funds.Those are already reduced to the role of assisting investment and providing equipment. The armed forces were well-represented in the parade - Upper Volta has an army of about fifteen hundred ???.

    This year's parade saw new emphasis on youth and its role in the community. Because only a little ever a quarter of the work force in Upper Volta is skilled, the country is looking to its educated youth to provide new impetus for the economy.

    More troops from the army of Upper Volts -- these belong to an airborne division.

    France supplies much of the military equipment used in Upper Volta under an agreement signed early in 1964.

    The police play a major part in internal security in Upper Volta. They number nearly 2-thousand.

    Even the very young were represented in the anniversary parade.

    General Lamizana was watching his fifth anniversary parade as President. The military government took over in Upper Volta one day after the anniversary celebration in 1966.
