    THE PADAS RIVER RUNS THROUGH THE CROCKER RANGE IN THE WEST COAST OF NORTH BORNEO. THE GORGE HAS SPECTACULAR SCENERY AND IN SPATE THE RIVER CARRIES SUCH A VOLUME OF WATER THAT IT FLOODS THE BEAUFORD TOWN AREA TO DEPTHS OF 6-8 FT EACH YEAR.

    THE MURUT TRIBESMEN ARE THE NOTORIOUS HEADHUNTING TRIBE OF BORNEO, THE TEAM WERE LUCKY TO PHOTOGRAPH A MEMBER OF THE TRIBE IN FULL 'DRESS COMPLETE WITH BLOWPIPE AND GALANG (HEAD-HUNTERS KNIFE).

    THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 18,724 MURUTS IN NORTH BORNEO, GENERALLY SPEAKING THEY INHABIT THE UPPER REACHES OF THE PADAS RIVER AND THE MOUNTAINS INACCESSIBLE COUNTRY NEAR THE INDONESIAN AND SARAWAK BORDERS. THEY WERE THE LAST TO ABANDON THE PRACTICE OF HEADHUNTING, BUT THEY HAVE NOT YET ADOPTED A SYSTEM OF SETTLED AGRICULTURE. INSTEAD THEY FOLLOW THE AGE-LONG PRACTICE OF SHIFTING CULTIVATION, USING WHAT IS USUALLY A SEVEN YEAR CYCLE.



    THEY ARE GREAT HUNTERS USING SPEARS, BLOWPIPES WITH POISON DARTS, AND DOGS.



    THEY ARE PRIMITIVE IN THEIR HABITS AND LIVING CONDITIONS THEY LIVE IN LONG HOUSES AND ARE PARTICULARLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO DISEASE.
