    Australian Jack Brabham (No 1) - the reigning world champion - driving a works Cooper-Climax, won the 225-mile British Grand Prix at Silverstone, July 16, in superb form after fighting off a dramatic challenge by Graham Hill (No. 4) in a BRM. His average speed was 108.69 m.p.h.

    The starting flag was dropped by Stirling Moss - who on the first outing since his crash - had arrived at the circuit by helicopter. Moss had been in hospital since his accident during practice for the Belgian Grand Prix, June 18, when he suffered a broken nose and back, two broken legs and cracked two of his ribs.

    Brabham - who completed the race in 2 h ours, 4 mins, 24.6 secs - led for 54 of the 77 laps before Graham Hill, who had stalled on the starting grid, passed him, driving the finest race of his career. On lap 55 he took the lead fro Brabham, but on lap 72, only five from the end, he spun off the track. Hill - who climbed out unhurt - put up the fastest time of the day in the 56th lap. 1 minute, 34.4 seconds. His average speed for the race was 111.62 m.p.h.

    John Surtees (No 9) in a Lotus-Climax, was second home in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 14.2 seconds. Third was Innes Ireland (no 7) - also in a Lotus - with a time of 2 hours, five mins. 54.2 secs.

    It was the fourth championship in succession that Brabham had won, and he now leads the 1960 series with a commanding total of 32 points. Second is McLaren with 27 points.
