  • Description

VISNEWS June 5 filmed rescue workers sifting the wreckage after two passenger trains, packed with homecoming workmen, were in head on collision at the little village of Eng. GOULART, nine miles from Sao Paulo. 45 were killed and 100 injured.

The two rush-hour trains were inadvertently switched to the same line when nearing their final destinations. Most of Sao Paulo's labourers live in this area. Both trains consisted of 8-10 carriages. Fortunately only one carriage was severely damaged, otherwise the death roll must have been much heavier.

The company responsible - the Central do Brasil - has the most extensive accident record of all Brazilian lines.

Last major railroad accident in Brazil was July 1958 when 126 persons were killed. 67 were killed in a similar accident May 1957, and 119 died in the 1952 tragedy. More than 1,000 were injured during the three accidents.
