    THE CHILEAN GOVERNMENT SAID YESTERDAY (WED) AN ARMY MUTINY IN PROTEST OVER LOW WAGES HAS ENDED. THE ANNOUNCEMENT CAME AFTER 12 HOURS OF TALKS BETWEEN THE REBEL GENERAL AND THE HEAD COMMANDING OFFICER OF SANTIAGO'S GARRISON.

    THE MUTINY, LED BY GENERAL ROBERTO VIAUX MARAMBIO, INVOLVED SECTIONS OF THE "TACNA" ARMY TANK REGIMENT. IT BEGAN ON TUESDAY AND CLIMAXED TWO WEEKS OF REPORTED UNREST IN THE ARMY OVER LOW WAGES. EARLIER THIS MONTH, GENERAL VIAUX AND FIVE OTHER SENIOR OFFICERS WERE FORCIBLY RETIRED.

    NO INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED BETWEEN LOYAL TROOPS AND THE REBELS DURING THE MUTINY. AND GENERALLY, THERE WAS AN OUTWARD APPEARANCE OF CALM IN CENTRAL SANTIAGO WITH BUSINESS CONTINUING AS NORMAL. HOWEVER, AT ONE TIME, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE GATHERED OUTSIDE THE GOVERNMENT HOUSE TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE GOVERNMENT AND THEIR OPPOSITION TO THE MUTINY.
