Background: TAXI-DRIVERS PROTESTED IN THE STREETS OF BUENOS AIRES ON FRIDAY AT THE GOVERNMENT ??? TO RAISE THE PRICE OF PETROL BY 65%. AN ESTIMATED 75% OF THE DRIVERS OF THE CITY'S 30,000 TAXIS WENT ON UNOFFICIAL STRIKE AND CALLED FOR A TOTAL STRIKE AND CALLED FOR A TOTAL STRIKE YESTERDAY. THIS WAS AVERTED BY THE 11TH HOUR GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT THAT IT WOULD ALLOW A 22% INCREASE IN TAXI FARES.

ABOUT 22,000 TAXI DRIVERS REFUSED TO USE THEIR CABS IN PROTEST AT THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE PETROL PRICE INCREASE, WHICH WAS MADE BY THE ECONOMICS MINISTER OF ARGENTINA, SENOR KRIEGER VASENA ON FRIDAY. HE ALSO ANNOUNCED PRICE INCREASES FOR ELECTRICITY AND CIGARETTES. SENOR VASENA SAID THAT THE INCREASES WERE TO HELP PAY FOR AN AMBITIOUS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME PLANNED FOR 1968.
