INDIAN AND PAKISTAN TROOPS CEASED FIRE TODAY (THURSDAY) ACROSS THE RANN OF KUTCH, THE DISPUTED BORDER AREA.

  • Description

INDIAN AND PAKISTAN TROOPS CEASED FIRE TODAY (THURSDAY) ACROSS THE RANN OF KUTCH, THE DISPUTED BORDER AREA. IN DELHI, WOMEN DEMONSTRATED OUTSIDE THE AMERICAN EMBASSY OVER THE SUPPLY OF AMERICAN ARMS TO PAKISTAN.

THE WOMEN WERE MEMBERS OF A LEFT-WING ORGANISATION CALLED THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN. ONE OF THE COMMUNIST LEADERS, MRS. RENU CHAKRAVARTI, ADDRESSED THE DEMONSTRATORS.

A PETITION WAS GIVEN TO AN EMBASSY OFFICIAL FROM THE DEMONSTRATORS, DEMANDING THAT ARMS SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN TO PAKISTAN BY THE UNITED STATES. THE PROTEST FOLLOWS THE RELEASE BY THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT OF PHOTOGRAPHS PURPORTING TO SHOW AMERICAN-BUILT PATTON TANKS IN THE RANN OF KUTCH ON MONDAY.

BUT NOT ALL THE PLACARDS OF THE DEMONSTRATING WOMEN WERE DIRECTED AGAINST U.S. AID TO PAKISTAN. SOME DEMANDED THE WITHDRAWAL OF THE UNITED STATES FROM SOUTH VIETNAM.

(THERE WERE NO DETAILS SO FAR ON THE CEASE-FIRE TALKS BUT THE INDIAN PROPOSALS WERE EXPECTED TO CONFORM BROADLY TO DEMANDS FOR AN END TO THE FIGHTING AND A RETURN TO THE OLD FRONTIER POSITIONS).
