  • Description

In Turkey, hundreds of thousands of workers staged in country-wide two-hour strike on Monday (20 March), in protest against the deaths of six university students who were killed in a bomb-blast at Istanbul University. The students died when unknown assailants hurled explosives at them as they were returning to the campus on Thursday (16 March). Monday's nation-wide strike disrupted public transport, offices and factories in all Turkey's major cities.

SYNOPSIS: The attack on the students led to the University being closed immediately as a security measure. In addition to the six male students who died in the blast, at least forty-four other students were injured. Police said the victims were returning to the University after lunch, and had all gone through the campus security checks, when the killers attacked. The incident aroused strong indignation among the people of Istanbul, and dozens of volunteers jointed with police to search for the culprits. The investigation was concentrated on the suburb of Umraniye, one of the poorer districts of Istanbul. Uniformed and plainclothes police began a systematic house-to-house search for explosives, weapons or any other evidence of subversion.

The deaths of the six students brought the total number of people killed in political violence in Turkey this year to 80. And although Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit has promised to clamp down on left-and right-wing extremists, the upsurge in violence has reportedly incensed the Turkish population to the stage where they are ready to take matters into their own hands, In this search of Umraniye, police and their helpers arrested a number of suspects, and seized quantities of dynamite as well as communist posters and other material. Police say they won't give up until they have cornered those responsible for the student killings.
