Background: EXTRA POLICE HAVE BEEN PLACED ON DUTY OUTSIDE THE WEST GERMAN EMBASSY IN CAIRO. THIS MOVE FOLLOWS A WAVE OF ANTI-GERMAN DEMONSTRATIONS THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST IN PROTEST AT WEST GERMANY'S DECISION TO RECOGNISE ISRAEL.

TEN THOUSAND PEOPLE TOOK PART IN A FOUR-HOUR DEMONSTRATION IN THE IRAQ CAPITAL, BAGHDAD ON TUESDAY - AND BONN OFFICIALS SAY THAT THE UPPER TWO FLOORS OF THE WEST GERMAN EMBASSY WERE GUTTED BY FIRE DURING THE PROTEST.

DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST WEST GERMANY HAVE ALSO BEEN HELD IN THE LEBANON - IN BEIRUT AND TRIPOLI.

AT A MEETING OF ARAB FOREIGN MINISTERS A MAJORITY AGREED THAT THEY WOULD BREAK OFF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH WEST GERMANY, SHOULD SHE ESTABLISH TIES WITH ISRAEL. TUNISIA, MOROCCO AND LIBYA DISAGREED WITH THE DECISION - AND THEIR EMBASSIES TOO HAVE BEEN THE SCENES OF DEMONSTRATIONS IN OTHER ARAB COUNTRIES.

(TODAY - THURSDAY - EGYPTIAN RIOT POLICE HAD TO BLOCK THE APPROACHES TO THE WEST GERMANY EMBASSY IN CAIRO AS ABOUT TWO HUNDRED DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED TOWARDS THE BUILDING SHOUTING ANTI-GERMAN SLOGANS.)
