Background: International football ..... and reigning world champions West Germany proved too defensive for an attacking Brazilian side in their friendly international at the giant Maracana stadium in Rio De Janeiro on Sunday (12 June). The two teams drew one-all.
SYNOPSIS: The Germans, in white shirts, kicked off in the second half after spending most of the first half holding off the attacking Brazilians, who kept up the pressure after the break. Roberto went close with this shot, but Maier saved yet again.
The West Germans seemed content to hold off the Brazilian offensive, apparently satisfied with their victories the previous week against Venezuela and Uruguay. But nine minutes into the second half, Fischer took the ball from Luis Pereira, and the German caught the Brazilian defence off-guard.
The score spurred on the West Germans, who had spent all but three minutes of the first half defending their goal. Fischer closed in again, but this time Brazilian keeper Leao was taking no chances.
For all Brazil's attacking football, it wasn't until four minutes before the finish of the game that they gained their reward, when Rivelino scored....and the 106,000 fans in the Maracana stadium went wild.
Brazil completely dominated the game, but wasted many of their chances with tactical errors. Though, as they tried desperately to break the draw in the last minutes, they could hardly be blamed for missing this shot.
