  • Description

THE NIGERIAN HEAD OF STATE, MAJOR-GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON, MET WITH A PARTY OF VISITING BRITISH INDUSTRIALISTS AT HIS LAGOS RESIDENCE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY, MARCH 10). THE TWENTY-ONE MAN PARTY HAD JUST COMPLETED AND EXTENSIVE TOUR OF NIGERIA FOR A FIRST-HAND LOOK AT THE COUNTRY'S ECONOMIC PROSPECTS.

WITH THE RECENT END OF THE CIVIL WAR, THE INDUSTRIALISTS WERE ANXIOUS TO TALK WITH GENERAL GOWON AND FIND OUT HOW BEST BRITAIN CAN HELP NIGERIA. TEAM LEADER, SIR DUNCAN OPPENHEIN WAS TOLD THAT ANY APPREHENSION ABOUT NIGERIA'S SUITABILITY FOR INVESTMENT IS NOW A THING OF THE PAST.

GENERAL GOWON ASSURED HIS GUESTS THAT SAFETY AND SECURITY HAD BEEN RESTORED, AND THAT THE COUNTRY WAS AGAIN WELL EQUIPPED TO HANDLE FOREIGN INTEREST OF ANY NATURE. HE HOPED BRITISH INDUSTRY WOULD CONTINUE TO TAKE SERIOUS INTEREST IN THE MANY POSSIBILITIES FOR RAPID DEVELOPMENT, AND THEREFORE TRY TO BUILD ON ITS TRADITIONAL POSITION IN THE NIGERIAN MARKET.
