    GHANA'S ANNUAL LEGAL YEAR SERVICE WAS HELD IN HOLY TRINITY CATHEDRAL, ACCRA, LAST SATURDAY (OCTOBER 5) DESPITE THE DECISION OF THE GHANA BAR ASSOCIATION TO BOYCOTT IT. THE BAR ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCED ITS DECISION LAST MONTH WHEN ITS PRESIDENT, MR JOE APPIAH, SAID THE ACTIVITIES AND UTTERANCES OF CHIEF JUSTICE, MR JUSTICE AKUFFO ADDO, HAD BROUGHT THE ASSOCIATION INTO DISREPUTE.

    AT ITS ANNUAL GENERAL CONFERENCE, THE BAR ASSOCIATION RESOLVED THAT NO MEMBER SHOULD ACCEPT THE CHIEF JUSTICE'S INVITATION TO THE LEGAL YEAR SERVICE.

    TWO LEADING MEMBERS OF THE ASSOCIATION SOUGHT A COURT INJUNCTION AGAINST THE CHIEF JUSTICE AND JUDICIAL SECRETARY IN MAY RESTRAINING THEM FROM ISSUING A CIRCULAR WHICH BANNED BARRISTERS WHO HAD NOT PAID THEIR SOLICITOR'S LICENSE FEES FROM PRACTISING IN COURT. THIS WAS GRANTED, BUT WAS LATER REVERSED BY THE APPEAL COURT IN FAVOUR OF THE CHIEF JUSTICE.

    THE SERVICE WENT AHEAD, HOWEVER, DESPITE THE STRAINED RELATIONS BETWEEN THE ASSOCIATION AND THE CHIEF JUSTICE.

    THE PROCESSION TO THE CATHEDRA WAS LED BY MR JUSTICE AKUFFO ADDO AND INCLUDED MORE THAN 200 LAWYERS, MAINLY FROM THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL'S OFFICE. THE LESSONS WERE READ BY MR VICTOR OWUSU, ATTORNEY-SERMON WAS GIVEN BY THE SYNOD CLERK OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF GHANA, THE REV. A.L. KWANSA AND THE CONGREGATION INCLUDED THE VICE-CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL AND COMMISSIONER OF POLICE, MR J.W.K. HARLLEY, COMMISSIONERS AND MEMBER OF THE DIPLOMATS CORPS.
