South African Prime Minister Mr. Vorster, on tour of the country's black African homelands for?

  • Description

South African Prime Minister Mr. Vorster, on tour of the country's black African homelands for the first time officially, said on Tuesday (July 27) that the nation would solve its own problems in its own time. He was speaking in Sibasa, homeland of the Venda people, one of the four black homelands on his week-long tour. The other homelands on his schedule are Tewanaland, North Sotho and Machangana.

SYNOPSIS: South African Prime Minister John Vorster arrived in Sibasa, Northern Transvaal on Tuesday in the course of his first official tour of the country's black African homelands.

Mr. Vorster, who included a visit to a local trade school in his programme here in the homeland of the Venda people, will be conferring in the course of this tour with the leaders of the homelands, which are now being guided towards self-Government under the Government's apartheid policy.

During recent months Prime Minister Vorster has had a series of meetings with homelands leaders. Zulu leader Gatsha Buthelezi said after one of them that it could be a 'turning point' in relations between white South African leaders and those of the homelands.

Speaking in Sibasa, this was what Mr. Vorster said about his tour.

As Mr. Vorster moves around on his tour, the local people have been welcoming him with native music and dancing.

Local leaders too are glad to be meeting him for the first time on their own ground, on a trip taking the South African Prime Minister to Tswanaland. North Sotho and Machangana, as well as to this Venda homeland.

The tour is thought by some observers an attempt to answer those black African leaders who say they cannot begin a dialogue with South Africa until they sea evidence of one going on between white and black in South Africa.
