Background: Visnews cameras recently visited Mosul, the town in North Iraq where on Mar 8 Col. Abdul Shawaf started his ill-fated anti-Kassem revolt which ended in his own death and bloody massacre in the city.
Soldiers and pro-government tribesmen patrolled the streets where wrecked houses and wars gave silent evidence of the heavy fighting which had taken place. Tanks and jeeps picked their way through the rubble in the streets, and government supporting Iraqi were busily gathering arms captured from the rebels.
Many of Shawaf's followers fled to neighbouring Syria when the revolt failed. Others, who failed to make good their escape were torn to pieces by the mob. Scores of captured rebels await trial in Baghdad jails.
