  • Description

POSITIONS IN THE TOUR DE FRANCE CYCLE RACE WERE TURNED UPSIDE DOWN YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) IN THE TENTH STAGE, LEAVING THE FAVOURITES MORE THAN NINE MINUTES BEHIND THE LEADER.

THE NEW RACELEADER WAS 25-YEAR-OLD ITALIAN TOMASSO DE PRA, WHO WON THE 234.5 KILOMETRE (147-MILE) MOUNTAIN STAGE FROM BAYONNE TO PAU AFTER A SUCCESSFUL TWO-MAN BREAKAWAY WITH BELGIAN, WILLY INTVEN.

AFTER NINE FLAT STAGES, A SHAKE-UP WAS EXPECTED WHEN THE THREE-WEEK TOUR ENTERED THE MOUNTAINS - BUT NOTHING AS DRAMATIC AS THIS. FRENCH STAR JACQUES ANQUETIL, BIDDING TO WIN THE TOUR FOR THE SIXTH TIME, NOW HAS AN ENORMOUS LEEWAY TO MAKE UP.

THE FIRST TWO IN THE STAGE, DE PRA AND INTVEN, WERE ORIGINALLY AMONG THE NINE RIDERS WHO PEDALLED AWAY FROM THE MAIN PACK AFTER 57 KILOMETRES (LESS THAN 40 MILES). AT THE SUMMIT OF THE 1,700 (5,000 FEET) MOUNT AUBISQUE, HIGHEST POINT ON THE STAGE AND ABOUT 50 KILOMETRES (30 MILES) FROM THE FINISH, DE PRA AND INTVEN HAD LEFT EVERYONE ELSE BEHIND.

DR PRA HAS EMERGED AS A SERIOUS CONTENDER FOR OUTRIGHT VICTORY IN PARIS ON 14 JULY. ITALIANS ARE NOW HOPING THAT HE CAN REPEAT THE FEAT OF FELLOW-COUNTRYMAN FELICIC GIMONDI, WHO WON LAST YEAR'S TOUR AFTER BEING VIRTUALLY UNKNOWN WHEN IT BEGAN.
