  • Description

One of the earliest winters in memory has hit Austria. Film taken in the Vorarlberg and Tyrol regions, October 22, shows drifts lying up to six feet deep.

Motorists were the first to suffer. Many cars were halted on the main roads to Switzerland.

The Arlberg Pass was particularly dangerous - not only from ice and snow on the road but also from the danger of avalanches. Police turned out to help speed the drivers on their way.

Small hill farmers, tool were among the victims. For the first time in their lives they were drying off hay on top of the snow. Their wives were digging for root crops - in the snow.

A young roe buck, parted from its mother, was one of the saddest sights of winter in autumn.

And winter in autumn it was. Dead leaves, normally wind-swept along dry roads, formed a carpet on the snow.
