Background: United States military helicopters stationed in the Philippines are playing a vital role in bringing relief to flood-stricken areas. They have been flying emergency food supplies to isolated parts of flooded Northern Luzon.

Though latest reports suggest that the level of the floodwater has been going down, communications are still disrupted and many villages cut off.

Once essential food supplies have been flown in, the Government will have to tackle the threat of cholera and typhoid outbreaks. Every available aircraft is being mustered for mercy flights.
