    SNOW FELL IN HELSINKI JANUARY 15 AS PEOPLE QUEUED AT THE POLLS TO VOTE IN THE FINNISH PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS. DURING THE TWO-DAY ELECTION THEY WERE TO CHOOSE 300 ELECTORS FROM 1,569 CANDIDATES. THESE ELECTORS WILL MEET FEBRUARY 15 TO VOTE ON A NEW PRESIDENT FROM FOUR CANDIDATES.

    PRESIDENT KEKKONEN, WHOM IT WAS CONFIDENTLY FORECAST WOULD BE RE-ELECTED, AND HIS WIFE, WERE THE FIRST VOTERS AT THE CITY HALL. MANY OBSERVERS ARE OF THE OPINION THAT, AS THE SOVIET UNION - WHICH RECENTLY DELIVERED A MILITARY NOTE TO FINLAND - ARE IN FAVOUR OF DR. KEKKONEN'S RE-ELECTION, MANY VOTES WILL BE SWAYED IN HIS DIRECTION.

    THE FOUR NOMINATED CANDIDATES IN THE ELECTION ARE: DR.KEKKONEN, SUPPORTED BY THE AGRARIAN, FINNISH PEOPLE'S, SWEDISH PEOPLE'S AND THE CENTRE PARTIES; MR. PAAVO AITIO, COMMUNIST PARTY; MR. RAFAEL PAASIO, SOCIAL DEMOCRAT PARTY; AND MR. EMIL SKOG, DISSIDENT SOCIAL DEMOCRATS.
