Background: The hills of Rio de janeiro, one of the worlds most picturesque cities, have for year been disfigured with shanty towns. Now the city authorities have put into action a scheme under which many of the "shack cities" will be demolished and their inhabitants moved to modern apartments.

This month three shanty areas have been cleared including Teresinha where 180 families were moved to new flats. Eventually up to half a million people will be resettled in a programme extending over several years.

Teresinha has been a shanty town for 15 to 20 years -- for many of the families it is the only home they have known. Family possessions have to be carried down the hillside to trucks. Meanwhile, Army experts go about the job of demolishing the unsanitary and ramshackle dwellings. Households pets go too -- but they are anaesthetized first to make the move easier.

The new apartments are in the suburb of Cordovil, and the flats include modern amenities -- the first some of the former hillside people will have had.

Hopefully, the shack cities, known in Rio as Favelas, will eventually become only a memory. The resettled families have to purchase their new apartments by monthly payments. The massive scheme aims to remove the eyesores that the favelas represent, and provide the opportunity for a new life in decent housing for the inhabitants.
