  • Description

AT AUSTRALIA'S OLYMPIC PARK IN MELBOURNE LAST WEEK, A NEW WORLD TIME FOR THE THREE MILES AND A NEW AUSTRALIAN TIME FOR THE ONE MILE WERE ADDED TO THE RECORD BOOKS. THE WORLD RECORD WENT TO THE AUSTRALIAN ATHLETE, RON CLARKE. COMPETING IN THE THREE MILES, CLARKE WAS RUNNING AGAINST THE NEW ZEALANDER AND WORLD RECORD HOLDER, MURRAY HALBERG. THE FIRST LAP SW CLARKE SLIP INTO FOURTH PLACE.

THE EARLY PACE WAS SET BY NUMBER 12,J. COYLE OF GLENHUNTLY. CLARKE MOVED UP BEHIND HIM TO RUN INTO SECOND PLACE.

A COMPARATIVE FAILURE AT THE TOKYO OLYMPICS, CLARKE WAS OUT TO RE-ESTABLISH HIMSELF AS WORLD CLASS RUNNER.

HERE IS THE POINT WHEN CLARKE DECIDED TO MAKE HIS BREAK. HE QUICKLY OPENED UP A BIG BREAK AND IT WAS OBVIOUS IT WAS A MATTER OF BY HOW FAR HE WOULD WIN.

COMING UP TO THE BELL LAP AND IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT RON CLARKE HAD HE NEW WORLD RECORD IN HIS GRASP. THE BIG CROWD ROARED ENCOURAGEMENT AS HE SPRINTED ROUND THE LAST LAP.

CLARKE WENT THROUGH THE TAPE IN 13-MINUTES-SEVEN-POINT-SIX SECONDS, TWO-POINT-FOUR SECONDS BETTER THAN THE OLD RECORD. IT WAS A JUBILANT CLARKE WHO HEARD THE TIME ANNOUNCED. HE STARTED OFF ON A VICTORY RUN OF THE TRACK, WITH CONGRATULATION FROM MURRAY HALBERG, THE MAN WHOSE RECORD HE HAD CAPTURED.

EARLIER IN THE MEETING, THE NEW ZEALAND CHAMPION PETER SNELL, HAD THRILLED THE CROWD WITH A BRILLIANT RUN IN THE MILE EVENT. HERE HE IS GOING TO THE FRONT AT THE START OF THE THIRD LAP, FOLLOWED BY FELLOW NEW ZEALANDER JOHN DAVIES.

THE LAST LAP, AND SNELL CLEARED RIGHT AWAY FROM THE FIELD TO AN EASY WIN. HIS POWERFUL FINISH TOOK HIM TO THE LINE IN THREE-MINUTES - 57-POINT-SIX SECONDS, SETTING A NEW AUSTRALIAN RECORD. IT LOWERED THE TIME SET BY ALBY THOMAS IN MARCH THIS YEAR.
