Rain sheeted down on Montreal at the phenomenal rate of four-and-a-quarter inches in just six hours. Drains and rivers could not possibly cope and the waters rose rapidly. Streets disappeared in large lakes of floodwater -- and so almost did the motor-cars parked there. Some cars, as can be seen in our film, were only about a foot away from being totally submerged. Drivers were strained and had to seek refuge on top of their vehicles until rescued by rowing boat and canoe.
Firemen had a busy day, evacuating families from the low-lying area. About 50 families were evacuated from suburban Ville St. Michele. Outside the city, main roads were blocked and would be so for some time, said reports.
