  • Description

DEMONSTRATORS WERE ON THE MARCH IN HOLLAND YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) TO EXPRESS THEIR FEELINGS ABOUT UNITED STATES PARTICIPATION IN THE VIETNAM WAR - SOME SUPPORTING THE AMERICANS AND SOME OPPOSING THEM. IN THE HAGUE, THERE WAS A CLASH INVOLVING POLICE WHEN 3,000 PEOPLE STAGED A MARCH IN SUPPORT OF THE AMERICANS AND A GROUP OF YOUTHS PUT ON A COUNTER-DEMONSTRATION.

THE HAGUE'S PRO-AMERICAN DEMONSTRATORS WERE ESCORTED BY ABOUT 175 POLICE, SOME MOUNTED AND SOME WITH DOGS, ON A MARCH THROUGH THE STREETS OF THE CITY TO THE AMERICAN EMBASSY, WHERE THE MARCHERS HANDED OVER A PETITION EXPRESSING THEIR APPROVAL AND SUPPORT. NEAR THE EMBASSY, A GROUP OF YOUTHS UNFURLED BANNERS CRITICISING THE AMERICANS AND HURLED SMOKE BOMBS.

SCUFFLES BROKE OUT WITH THE POLICE, WHO HAD TO MAKE REPEATED CHARGES TO BREAK UP THE COUNTER-DEMONSTRATION. THE POLICE MADE 27 ARRESTS. MEANWHILE, IN AMSTERDAM, ABOUT 1,000 PEOPLE WERE HOLDING AN ANTI-AMERICAN DEMONSTRATION, CARRYING VIET CONG FLAGS, PORTRAITS OF PRESIDENT HO CHI MINH OF NORTH VIETNAM, AND BANNERS READING "JOHNSON WAR CRIMINAL".
