  • Description

Heavy floods in Northern Bangladesh have killed five people and made 10,000 families homeless. The flooding has been caused by torrential monsoon rains.

SYNOPSIS: Waters from the Jamuna and Brahamputra rivers have engulfed areas in the Jamalpur, Rangpur and Mymensingh districts, partly submerging houses and marooning away people, some on treetops. Altogether some 400,000 people have been affected. All the country's major rivers were reported to be flowing above danger level.

Some residents have to ferry themselves to and from their homes.

Surging waters have destroyed crops and washed away temporary homesteads. In the Mymensingh district alone, about 95,000 acres (38,400 hectares) of land were partially or completely damaged. A government team headed by Presidential adviser, Mrs. Denita Roy visited some affected areas on Monday (29 August). They heard from relief workers of steps being taken to combat the floods. Medical teams have been giving vaccine and water-purifying tablets as anti-epidemic measures.

The flood forecasting and Warning Centre said conditions in some districts could improve as the rivers Ganges and Teesta began to fall.
