  • Description

Wearing brightly coloured clothes and carrying anti-nuclear slogans and banners, some 500 teenagers set out from Hackney, June 4, on a 50-mile Whitsun trek to the atomic research establishment, Foulness Island, Essex. The young campaigners carried a float at the head of the procession, depicting a Blue Streak rocket resting on a coffin.

As the marchers neared Foulness, June 6, they were caught in heavy rain and by the time they reached the gates of the research centre were wet and tired. After a 2-minute silence for bomb-victims, security men met them at the main control point and they were dispersed quietly.

The march - organised by the Chingford Youth Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament - differed from recent weekend demonstrations at Foulness when police were forced to haul people from their lying positions in the road and take them off to local police stations in waiting vans.
