Background: President and Madame de Gaulle were at Orly airport, Paris, France, Oct 26 to greet Madagascar's President Tsiranana and his wife, who were arriving for a 3-day visit.
They flew the last stage of the journey - from Nice - in General de Gaulle's special presidential plane.
Madagascar - with an area slightly bigger than that of France itself - became an independent state within the French Community in April this year.
In Nice, Tsiranana said there were no problems between the two countries - he came simply to make a friendly visit. Madagascar was grateful to France, he said, for granting independence.
