  • Description

While the future of Zimbabwe Rhodesia is being discussed at a Constitutional Conference in London, white Zimbabwe Rhodesians attended two ceremonies on Wednesday (12 September) symbolic of the country's political and military situation -- one was to mark Pioneer day and the other a memorial service for nine of the fifteen Zimbabwe-Rhodesian soldiers killed during last week's raid into Mozambique.

SYNOPSIS: A crowd of three hundred people gathered in Central Salisbury's Cecil Rhodes square for the traditional ceremony in memory of the first British pioneer column from South Africa which raised the British flag in Rhodesia on September the 12th 1890. Some of the descendants of the first pioneers were in the crowd to commemorate the occasion. Supreme Commander Lieutenant General Peter Walls, also watched the traditional ceremony.

One hour later soldiers, airmen and grieving relatives attended an open air memorial service for nine of the fifteen soldiers killed during last week's raid into Mozambique. The ceremony took place at the barracks of the exclusively white Rhodesian Light infantry on the outskirts of salisbury. The bodies of the soldiers were not brought back to Zimbabwe Rhodesia.

General Peter Walls, was also at this ceremony, along with acting Prime Minister Edward Mazaiwana, standing in while Bishop Abel Muzorewa is in London. General Walls has told newsmen that Zimbabwe Rhodesia will launch further strikes into Zambia and Mozambique and according to General Walls last week's raid was prompted by a guerrilla build-up across the border.
