    The Iranian Prime Minister, Amir Abbas Hoveyda, said in Paris on Monday (24 May) that France will play a major role in Iran's industrial development and construction of nuclear power plants.

    Mr. Hoveyda, who had arrived earlier on a five day official visit, had 90 minutes of discussions with his French counterpart, Jacques Chirac. The visit follows French disappointment that its share of huge nuclear power plant orders was slipping away in the face of tough international competition.

    The Iranian Prime Minister referred to French help in the construction ??? underground railway in the capital, Teheran. Agreement was also near on a site for the building of a nuclear power plant with French technological assistance, he said.

    French left-wing groups and a number of Iranian students in Paris have protested at the visit. In a statement, they attacked what they called "the latest massacre of Iranian revolutionaries by the forces of repression" in Iran. They claimed that about 10 students were killed on ??? May after a demonstration at Teheran University against earlier deaths.
