Background: The Syrian Foreign Minister, Abdel-Halim Khaddam, arrived in Abu Dhabi on Saturday (23 October) for talks with United Arab Emirate (U.A.E.) officials on the situation in Lebanon.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Khaddam was greeted at the airport by his U.A.E. counterpart, Ahmed Khalifa El Suweidi and other officials. He was in Abu Dhabi to brief officials about the details of last week's Riyadh meeting at which a peace plan for Lebanon was worked out.
Mr. Khaddam carried personal messages to the President of the U.A.E. Sheik Zaid Bin Sultan from President Hafez Al-Assad of Syria about the Riyadh talks. He said later Syrian troops would stay in Lebanon until the aims of Syrian military intervention there were achieved. The troops would not be withdrawn unless President Elias Sarkis requested it.
