  • Description

Rancho Boyeros airport, Havana, July 15, and waiting on the tarmac is Senor Chamon, newly appointed as Cuba's Ambassador in Moscow, accompanied by President of the Cuban National Bank, Commandante Ernesto "Che" Guevara. They were waiting to greet Communist China's Vice Minister for Foreign Trade, Lu Chu Chiang, who arrived with a trade mission numbering thirteen.

Representatives cultural links between the two far flung countries were Chinese girls of the Peking Opera, currently visiting Cuba.

With Castro's Government at present on a USSR honeymoon, the arrival of officials from another Communist country was no great surprise, although no one knew quite which route the Chinese mission had taken to get to Cuba.

Two big question marks hung over the Chinese visit - was Cuba thinking of setting up diplomatic relations with the Communist Chinese- as some rumours would have it- and or was China interested in buying up some of the Cuba sugar coming on to market following the USA's economic retaliation to Cuban affronts.

A Communist China-Cuba link at official diplomatic level would presumably mean cancelling the diplomatic relations currently existing between Cuba and Nationalist China.
