    Background: Iraq President Saddam Hussein has strengthened his rule after breaking up what he claimed was a conspiracy against his government. On Wednesday (8 August) the alleged conspiracy was brought to an end with a mass execution of high ranking government and Baathist party officials. In all 21 men, including the deputy Prime Minister, Education minister and a former industry minister went before the firing squad.

    SYNOPSIS: The announcement of the executions brought cheering crowds out into the streets. Many carried banners and placards acclaiming the overthrow of the conspirators. The alleged plot was announced last month, less than two weeks after 42-year-old Hussein succeeded his ailing mentor Ahmed Hassan Al-Bakr, as President of the Republic and head of the Baathist Party.

    The crackdown has made the new President the most powerful man in Iraq..an oil rich country of 12-million people. As well as the government he also controls the armed forces. A total of 68 men were accused of taking part in the plot. As well as those executed -- 33 were sentenced to prison terms, 13 were acquitted and another, who was sentenced to death is believed to have ??? the country. the executions were said to have been carried out by party members using their own weapons. After the executions President Hussein told crowds gathered int he Palace gardens that treason had been defeated and the people's will now prevailed. He also spoke traitors beyond the border. Observers believe he was referring to recent speculation of possible Syrian involvement in the alleged conspiracy.
