Background: Lanky Herb Elliott, the 20-year-old Australian now in America, beat the official world record for the mile at Bakerafield, California, on Sunday. But his time of 3 minutes 57.9 seconds may go down in the books as equal to John Landy's record of 3 minutes 58 seconds, for the International Amateur Athletic Federation does not recognise tenths of a second in timing for races beyond 1,000 yards.

Elliott's win came after a tremendous duel in the last 20 yards with fellow countryman Merv Lincoln, after the two had broken away from Gail Hodgson, of Oklahoma, and Don Bowden, of California. He finished only three strides ahead of Lincoln.

Just a fortnight previously, Elliott ran a 3 minute 58.1 mile in Los Angeles. Derek Ibbotson's 3 minutes 57.2 seconds run at the White City in 1957 still awaits ratification, after the question of pace-making has been raised.
