Background: Liberia has resumed full diplomatic relations with Portugal, Liberia's Foreign Minister, Mr. Cecil Dennis, told a press conference in Monrovia on Monday (3 February).

Mr. Dennis said, in a statement, that, in view of Portugal's policy of decolonisation of all her African territories, "favourable conditions now exist for a resumption of diplomatic and other relations between Liberia and Portugal".

Liberia severed her trade and diplomatic links with Portugal in the early 1960's in response to a United Nations resolution.

Mr. Dennis went on to say the Portugal's decolonising activities -- such as the setting up of a transitional, national government in Angola last month -- "are positive contributions to the cause of freedom, human dignity, national self-determination, fruitful and mutually beneficial relations among nations and people".

The Foreign Minister indicated that trade relations will also be resumed with Portugal.
