  • Description

The Singapore government on Wednesday (6 February) anxiously awaited the outcome of the first tentative tripartite negotiations between the government, North Korea, and four guerrillas holding three crew hostages aboard a hijacked ferry-boat,
The guerrillas said on Tuesday (5 February) that they wanted to accept a government offer to exchange their present quarters on board the ferry for some foreign mission, and specified that it should be that of North Korea.

The government has forwarded the guerrillas request to the North Korean consulate in Singapore and has said it will inform the hijackers when the reply from the North Korean government in Pyongyang is received. So far, there has been no official statement granting the guerrillas diplomatic asylum in the North Korean consulate.

On Tuesday night, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kwan Yew, in his first official comment on the seven-day-old hijack said, "We will minimise the reasons of any group wishing to pick any guerrel with us".

Singapore, he said, was the third largest oil refining centre in the world. Had the guerrillas succeeded in their attempt to blow up Shell oil storage tanks last Thursday (31 January), then oil supplies to Southeast Asia, as well as to Singapore, would have been seriously affected.
