TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: ASPELL: "Frau Klarsfeld, what support did you get from the Egyptian authorities to have Herr Achenbach expelled from the European-Arab Parliamentary Co-operation?"

KLARSFELD: "Until now I am waiting for (indistinct) for answer, because I was coming to Cairo to ask for the Egyptian Parliament to throw out Achenbach's general directorship of this association for ... this parliamentary association for co-operation between the Europe countries and the Arab countries. Because when I brought to Cairo a study from a historian in France on the role of Achenbach during the war in the Hitler embassy in the financial solution of the Jewish question. So I wanted to show it to the Egyptian Parliament. and then they have to decide if they can no longer take the responsibility to have such a man who was responsible for the deportation of more than one hundred Jews from France. If not, so they have to throw him out. If they don't do it as soon as possible, so I think it means that this Co-operation plunges its roots in a criminal past."

ASPELL: "And what support did they give you?" KLARSFELD: "No support. I have been received by some body of the information centre who asked me to give him the file. He wanted to transmit it to the Egyptian Parliament."

ASPELL: "Did you meet any of the Egyptian parliamentarians at all?"

KLARSFELD: "Nobody ... because I had no time to stay here a long time to wait for an answer. But I think that now they have the opportunity to study this file, and some days later they can given a communication to explain that Achenbach is no longer a member of the Association.

Background: In a interview given in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Thursday (16 January), celebrated Nazi-hunter Frau Beate Klarsfeld explained the reasons behind her request that the Egyptian authorities expel West German parliamentarian Dr. Ernst Achenbach from the Association for European-Arab Co-operation.

Frau Klarsfeld arrived in Cairo on Tuesday to present her case to the Egyptian authorities. She alleges that Dr. Achenbach -- a German diplomat in France during the Second World War -- knew in advance about the deportation of French Jews. She further claims that Dr. Achenbach has recently used his parliamentary position in West German to prevent German courts from trying ex-Nazis for war crimes committed in France.

Dr. Achenbach -- a member of the Free Democrat party and co-founder of the Association for European-Arab Co-operation -- resigned from the West German Foreign Affairs Committee last year after criticism of his wartime role in France. But he has strongly denied prior knowledge of the deportation of French Jews.

Frau Klarsfeld's career as a Nazi-hunter has brought her into conflict with the authorities in several countries. In November 1968, the German-born Frenchwoman was sentenced to one year's imprisonment by a West German court after striking a prominent politician because of his alleged former association wit the Nazi regime. In July 1974, an unsuccessful attempt to kidnap Paris's alleged wartime Gestapo head Kurt Lischuka brought Frau Klarsfeld a two-month prison sentence from a French court. Later in the year she was expelled from Morocco in October for distributing pro-Israeli documents outside the Arab summit conference in the capital, Rabat.
