  • Description

A 20-YEAR-OLD BRITISH RACING DRIVER, MICHAEL KNIGHT ON SATURDAY WON JAPAN'S FIRST INTERNATIONAL FORMULA CAR RACE IN A BRABHAM JUNIOR AND WAS FIRST ACROSS THE FINISHING LINE IN A MARCO IN THE GRAND TOURING CAR RACE FOR THE GRAND PRIX. BUT HE WAS PENALISED FOR A STARTING FAULT IN THE GT RACE AND WAS PLACED FIFTH. GRAND PRIX WINNER WAS AN AMERICAN, RONNIE BUCHNAM IN A HONDA S600.

THE WEEKEND'S RACING ATTRACTED A CROWD OF ABOUT 100,000, ALTHOUGH THE SUZUKA CIRCUIT IS MORE THAN 100 FROM TOKYO.

IN THE INTERNATIONAL FORMULA RACE, KNIGHT COMPLETED 15 LAPS OF THE SIX KM (ABOUT TWO MILES) COURSE IN 38 MINS 46.4 SECS. THERE WERE 13 OTHER COMPETITORS, INCLUDING PRINCE TAKAMATSU, YOUNGER BROTHER OF THE EMPEROR, BUT ONLY ONE OF THEM, 25-YEAR-OLD PETER WARR, COMPLETED THE REQUIRED 15 LAPS. WARR'S TIME WAS 40 MINS 4.1 SECS.

THE GT RACE - FOR CARDS OF LESS THAN 1,000 c.c. - SAW A TUSSLE OVER THE WHOLE 12 LAPS BETWEEN KNIGHT'S MARCO AND BUCHNAM'S HONDA S600. TWO MORE HONDA S600 CARS, DRIVEN BY JAPANESE COMPETITORS, PROVIDED A CHALLENGE AND CAME IN SECOND AND THIRD.
