  • Description

ARCHBISHOP IAKOVOS, WHOSE ELECTION, JANUARY 13, AS PRIMATE OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH OF GREECE CAUSED A NATION-WIDE OUTCRY, RESIGNED IN ATHENS ON JANUARY 25, AFTER A STORMY NINE-HOUR SESSION OF THE HOLY SYNOD HE HAD SUMMONED HIMSELF.

MEMBERS OF THE CLERGY AND HIGH RANKING LAYMEN HAVE CHARGED THE ARCHBISHOP WITH "UNMENTIONABLE ACTS".THESE ACCUSATIONS LED TO AN INVESTIGATION CONDUCTED BY A BISHOP INTO HIS PRIVATE LIFE, AND TO AN ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE GREEK GOVERNMENT THAT UNLESS HE RESIGNED ON HIS OWN FREE WILL, IT WOULD TABLE A BILL IN PARLIAMENT EMPOWERING IT TO DEPOSE HIM.

IN HIS LETTER OF RESIGNATION THE ARCHBISHOP SAID: "I RESIGN FOLLOWING THE GOVERNMENT'S PRESSURE AND NOT OF MY OWN FREE WILL.I RESIGN IN ORDER TO AVERT ANY INTERFERENCE BY THE STATE IN THE INTERNAL AFFAIRS OF THE CHURCH".

THE ARCHBISHOP WAS CHOSEN BY A CONCLAVE ATTENDED BY 57 OUT OF THE 66 METROPOLITANS FORMING THE HIERARCHY OF THE GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH.THE PROPOSED GOVERNMENT BILL PROVIDED THAT IN FUTURE THE HEAD OF THE CHURCH WOULD BE ELECTED JOINTLY BY THE METROPOLITANS AND LAYMEN, INSTEAD OF BY THE METROPOLITANS ALONE.AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE ARCHBISHOP'S RESIGNATION, A GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID THE PLAN TO INTRODUCE THE BILL IN PARLIAMENT WOULD NOW BE DROPPED.A TEMPORARY REPLACEMENT WILL BE APPOINTED SHORTLY, UNTIL THE ELECTION OF A NEW PRIMATE.THE ELECTION IS TO BE HELD WITHIN FOUR WEEKS.
