  • Description

SCOPE: This is stock footage of the Air Force's B-52 bomber.

BACKGROUND: Sunday, the 29th of June, marks the 20th anniversary of the B-52. The stratofortress has flown longer than any other bomber in aviation history.

It was June 29, 1955 when Brigadier General William Eubanks flew the first B-52 to Castle Air Force Base, California from the Boeing plant in Seattle.

Since that time, seven different models of the B-52 have evolved, with the last model, the "H," coming off production line in 1962. Originally built as a high altitude strategic nuclear bomber, it was later adapted for low level bombing. Because of its versatility, the B-52 performed a more conventional role in Southeast Asia.

The giant bomber has been modified extensively throughout the years to keep pace with changing technology and mission requirements. Weapon systems undreamed of, at the B-52 inception, such as the Hound-dog and the SRAM (Short Range Attach Missiles) have become part of the B-52's arsenal.

These continuing modification programs will enable the aircraft to remain operational into the 1980's. By that time, a successor, possibly the B-1, can share and then assume the role that the B-52 had performed so well during its 20 years of service.
