  • Description

London's annual "Ideal Home" Exhibition, organised by the "Daily Mail", opens March 1, following the pre-view attended by the Duchess of Kent.

Olympia - scene of the show - has its spacious roofs lined with a summery blur material specially for the occasion, and in the Grand Hall is one of the most striking exhibits - the "Daily Mail" Georgian House. It combines the best of old and new interior fittings and furnishings - bathrooms and kitchen are modern, while elsewhere there is both modern and period furniture.

The Tulip Garden is gay with the colour of 50,000 tulip blooms, and in their midst a fountain plays gracefully at the centre of its huge fibre-glass basin. Seven other gardens are arranged round the tulips.

With Canadians, Australian and Cyprus stands, the exhibition has a strong Commonwealth flavour. Foreign countries are represented by Spain and the United States, among others.

Both Canada and U.S.A. are showing typical transatlantic houses. The "Canada trend house" is unconventionally built with timber and glass, while the American house - equipped with full air conditioning, central heating and "colour-co-ordinated bathrooms" -is designed to show "not an American home but the way Americans live".

A television system, already in use in California, enabling one baby-sitter to look, after five or more babies gives a glimpse into the future, and the less domestic exhibits include a huge space vehicle and a display illustrating the history of the British Post Office.
