  • Description

Former President Juan Bosch's return to the Dominican Republic was nailed as a great day for that country by thousands of Dominicans who sympathise with the rebel cause. Bosch returned last Saturday. But his return hasn't been all joy and warm greetings. Shooting between rightist and leftist groups has broken out. One Monday a student demonstrator was shot and killed by a guard at the National Palace in Santo Domingo.

The student was among a group of anti-American demonstrators protesting the occupation of colleges by members of the Inter-American peace-keeping forces. Eye witnesses say the youth jeered the sentry as the demonstration was breaking up and was shot in the back while walking away.

Meanwhile, the provisional government announced Monday that the rebel soldiers will be allowed to rejoin the nation's army. The announcement was made shortly after Provisional President Hector Garcia-Godoy met with former rebel leader Colonel Francisco Caamano.

Some American, observers fear that the presence of Bosch in the Dominican Republic might set off another insurrection.
