  • Description

General Salan, former French Commander-in-Chief in Algeria, denounced most aspects of French Government policy, in particular on Algeria, at a press conference in Paris Oct 25.

A throng of his supporters, including retired generals, paratroopers, ex-Servicemen's leaders and extremist politicians such as Georges Bidault of the Algeria Francaise Movement and Pierre Poujade, packed the conference hall as well as journalists and cameramen.

General Salan denounced the Government's decision not to allow him to return to Algeria (he was living in Algiers in retirement) as undemocratic and designed to prevent any discussion about the present status of Algeria and the Sahara which were 'integral parts of the indivisible Republic and which the Constitution does not authorise anyone to abandon.'
The conference was at the same hotel General de Gaulle made his historic "Save France" speech May 19, 1958, announcing his willingness to return as leader of a new Fifth Republic.
